The Codes Department enforces Building Codes, and certain Municipal Codes
regarding Zoning, Property Maintenance, Safety, and General Appearance of
the City. The Codes Department is responsible for reviewing new residential
and commercial building plans, the building inspections of commercial,
industrial and residential buildings, issuing permits, issuing certificates
of occupancy and the scheduling of building inspections.
The department consists of the Director of Codes, Building Official,
Building Inspectors, Municipal Codes Inspector, Permit Technician and
Department Coordinator and is located at 5175 Murfreesboro Road.
Director of Codes
The Director of Codes and Building Official is primarily responsible for
managing the department and ensuring that the duties of the department are
executed in a professional, courteous and prompt manner. This person is
also primarily responsible for ensuring that the residential and commercial
buildings meet the standards set forth by the International Code Council.
The Director is Kyle Brown.
Building Inspectors
The department’s Building Inspectors are responsible for inspecting residential
and commercial buildings. They check everything from the footing to the final
inspection of the home or building. Derek Beard and Steve Scarlett are the
Building Inspectors. Derek Beard also is our commercial plans reviewer.
The department currently follows 2006 International Building and Residential
Codes Standard.
Municipal Codes Inspectors
The department's Municipal Codes Inspectors are responsible for taking calls
calls from citizens who comment on properties and other areas of their
neighborhoods. They then make a visit to the place in question, and speaks
with the owner, or leaves a complaint notice or citation. Mike Jenkins is the
Municipal Codes Inspector.
Permit Technicians
The department's Permit Technicians are responsible for calculating and issuing
permits, calculating and collecting tap fees, assisting with the flow of
communication between citizens and the department and answering a variety of
questions. Rheta Engle is the Permit Technician.
Coordinator
Missy Riggert is the Codes Department Coordinator and Administrative Assistant.
In addition to answering phones, she collects permit fees, collects tap fees,
takes codes complaints and forwards them to the proper area, takes inspection
requests and forwards them on to the proper inspector. She also answers a
variety of questions and assists in the flow of communication between citizens
and the Codes, Engineering and Planning Departments.
All of the City’s inspectors and Codes officials are certified by the ICC and are
recognized by the Building Officials Codes Association (BOCA).

The department is located at 5175 Murfreesboro Road ans
is responsible for reviewing construction drawings,
managing city construction projects, the City's
Stormwater Program, and the City's GIS and Mapping Program.
Stormwater Program
The stormwater program is a federally mandated program.
This program required that the City of La Vergne develop a
stormwater program which addresses water quality issues.
Katie Kline holds the position as Stormwater Project
Engineer.
Stormwater Management
GIS and Mapping Coordinator
The mapping and GIS coordinator is responsible for
maintaining the city’s log of the streets in map
and database form using computer aided drafting
techniques and maintaining all 911 addressing for the
city. The coordinator also works with the City’s
Geographic Information System (GIS), which is also
connected with the County’s GIS. The coordinator
also maintains a database of roads and water and
sewer lines. Todd Schroeder currently holds the
position.
