Director of Library Services
Mr. Joe Gunter
email: jgunter@lavergne.org
Mr. Joe Gunter's library career started in 1974 as a library assistant in Corpus Christi,
Texas. After a brief period as an elementary school teacher in 1976-7, he returned to
library work in 1978 and stayed working as a library assistant in his hometown of
Corpus Christi until 1983.
From 1984 to 1985, he worked and lived in the northeastern plains of Colorado and
returned to San Antonio, Texas – once again as a library assistant and worked there
from 1985-1988. After attending library school in North Texas, he obtained his first
professional library experience at the Irving Public Library in Texas as the head
of Local History and Genealogy from 1989-1992.
It was at this time that he secured his first Library Director position with the
Eagle Valley Library District near Vail, Colorado and was there from 1992-1993.
Before venturing into the library administration arena he worked in an academic
and private school library in San Antonio, Texas and a Young Adult Librarian with
the City of Nashville from 1993-2001.
His last two library director positions have been in Texas (2002-2003) and
Colorado (2003-2006). He has spent the better part of 2007 co-writing a sci-fi
horror trilogy with one of his brothers which is due for publication sometime
in the near future. His ‘non-library’ career consisted of various levels of
success as a musician from 1969 to 1985.
He returned to the Tennessee area in November of 2007, staying with close friends
and working on their Black Angus cattle ranch. It was at this time that the
director’s position with the La Vergne Public Library was advertised and he
applied for the position in December of 2007. He welcomes this opportunity to
work with La Vergne in this capacity and looks forward to continuing the
important role that the library plays in the community.
