The City of La Vergne is fortunate to have a variety of programs which
allow the citizens of all ages to enjoy recreational and other
activities throughout the year. The senior citizens in La Vergne are
no exception. Ever since the city agreed to incorporate the La Vergne
Senior Citizens Club as a city department in the winter of 1999,
the once-small club has grown by leaps and bounds. Not only did the
number of programs -- designed to help keep the seniors active --
increase, but the participation by seniors of all ages did as well.
A Senior Citizens Advisory Committee – made up of an alderman, members of the community, members of the Senior Citizens Club, business leaders and County officials – was put in place prior to the opening of the Senior Citizens Center in May 2000. The first step for the committee was to find a location for the Center. An old recreational facility was chosen and totally renovated to serve the needs of the Seniors. Parks department employees – working with City employees, Rutherford County workhouse inmates and local businesses – stripped the building. New plumbing, wiring, walls, heating and air conditioning and more were installed in the building. An office, kitchen area, two restrooms, day/TV room and sewing room were constructed. In 2009, the Center began a second renovation to expand the space available.
The renovation of the building was key to the kicking off of the new program. Those involved with the City wanted the seniors to know that they were appreciated and were important to the City. A variety of activities – including classes, quilting, cards, games, special informational talks, birthday dinners and a monthly meeting -- now take place in the building each month.
A schedule fills the week with events for the seniors who seem to enjoy
their new building. The seniors hear talks on health-related issues and
medical benefits, they bowl each Tuesday, they enjoy music provided by
local talent, they receive chair massages from a LMT, they are taking
ceramics classes, they receive monthly blood pressure checks and take
monthly trips to the theatre.
The program has allowed the Seniors to enjoy a fuller life with a variety of activities which keep them active. Because of the planned programs and a full-time manager for the group, the membership has more than doubled. With La Vergne’s large senior population (approximately 1,500), a program which allows them the chance to be involved in the community and have a sense of worth is vitally important.
This program will continue to be popular with the city and citizens
because it has allowed more seniors to safely take part in a variety of
activities which allow them to stay young, get out of their homes and
continue to enjoy life with their peers and others.
The La Vergne Senior Center welcomes men and women aged 60 and over to become a member and enjoy all our wonderful activities. The center is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9am to 3pm. We are located at 337 Stones River Road. For more information please call the center at (615) 793-3048. Each Fall the La Vergne Senior Center hosts the La Vergne Senior Halloween Party.
